Georgia professors targeted as ‘leftist’ on watchlist

professor-watchlist-screenshotProfessors at Emory University and University of North Georgia are targeted in a new list intended to “expose” professors a right-wing group sees as having a left-wing bias. But critics see its publication as a potential threat to academic freedom.

The mission of Professor Watchlist, a project of conservative student group Turning Point USA, is to “to expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.”

The University of North Georgia’s Matthew Boedy, an assistant professor in its English department, is on the list for opposing the campus carry bill during this year’s spring legislative session. The bill would have allowed college students to carry concealed weapons on campus. His stance was shared by staunch conservatives and mainstream institutions. Republican Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed the bill, which was also opposed by the University System of Georgia and other leaders of the state’s universities and colleges.

The website cites no evidence of discrimination and does not state why he is thought to be advancing propaganda.

Emory philosophy professor George Yancy, who is included in the Watchlist, was the subject of racial harassment the last time he was singled out by right-wing groups. The Watchlist targets him for “Dear White America,”  a 2015 New York Times opinion piece that asks white people to confront the ways in which they are racist:

“I can see your anger. I can see that this letter is being misunderstood. This letter is not asking you to feel bad about yourself, to wallow in guilt. That is too easy. I’m asking for you to tarry, to linger, with the ways in which you perpetuate a racist society, the ways in which you are racist. I’m now daring you to face a racist history which, paraphrasing Baldwin, has placed you where you are and that has formed your own racism. Again, in the spirit of Baldwin, I am asking you to enter into battle with your white self. I’m asking that you open yourself up; to speak to, to admit to, the racist poison that is inside of you.”

As with Boedy, the website cites no evidence of discrimination or propaganda.

U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy (1950s)

Critics have seen the list as a potential threat to academic freedom. Both appeared recently on Georgia Public Broadcasting’s “On Second Thought,” where Boedy made references to McCarthyism — Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s 1950s Red Scare-era practice of making unsubstantiated accusations of anti-American activity.

The Campus Carry Bill is insane!  Under 24-26 year olds, youth having not yet entered the age wherein they fully comprehend consequences, in emotionally charged environments of open debate, ... having guns in classes....!!??  As a gun owner and faculty engaging first hand with students of all colors, faiths, and political beliefs I cannot - in any situation - imagine how a student having a gun or my having a gun in a classroom would benefit anyone.

In the rare and off-chance of in-class or on-campus gun violence I know from my connections in law enforcement that anyone with a weapon becomes a suspect and potential target.  Having a weapon only make the situation worse not better.

The legislature must not pass this bill, and if it does (again on straight party lines like last year) I urge the Governor to veto the bill again.

Yes! Then ask themselves why? The public needs to know.. let open this for discussion. Whites are the most loving and giving people. They love animals, people in stress, trees, climate, air, the environment, farming. New development. Just well rounded good people.

Us black folks feel the same way. If I read another Yahoo article about what is racist against black people according to a white writer, I'm going to scream!

A piece of my opinion is that I think we need to ask leftist college "professors" to confront the ways in which they are gratuitously socialist demagogues. Their excuses should be catalogued in the aforementioned "list" which needs to go nation-wide and be required reading for anyone considering attending, or paying for someone to attend, an American institution of "higher" learning. If that happened, I wager trade schools would flourish, the GDP would explode and the cupcake problem would crumble, so to speak.

Captive students who if they express another view will get failing grades!!! The country is NOT 90+% leftist so why are all the professors? Don't try saying the right are uneducated!! Just as many have degrees and graduate degrees at that but WE can't even get interviewed if it's known.. the leftists have ALWAYS been the racists and elitists !!

I see nothing wrong with this. We all need to confront these things, regardless of color, so we can move past this. Embrace it, and pass it on!

Did time at New College, GA Tech, GA State and NYU.

All of them liberal to a kookoo degree...professors, administration and the lunch ladies.

Unless I missed something, there is no threat in the list. No one is trying to remove anyone. So all this unicorn humping hand-wringing is a lot of crybaby BS.

What does raise my flag here...for years I've seen conservative guest speakers be banned or protests to ban them...not talk of academic freedom from publications, no criticism from the AJC or the like. This is wrong, but so was that.

Why? Your kids need a safe space? They can't handle the 'tragedy' of a leftist as a professor? I have several conservatives as my professors. Doesn't bother me.

So it's ok for professors to demean students who don't share leftists point of view but not OK for students to warn others about these liberal freaks?

Jonathan Webb You are VERY lucky. I know a few students whose grades take a hit when they differ with lefty profs. Their motto seems to be "free speech for me, but not for thee". It certainly takes and discussion out of the realm of possibility while college is SUPPOSED tio be a place for many ideas.

I see nothing wrong with what Yancey asks in his letter. I'm white, late middle age, grew up during the end of segregation, and believe racism still exists. Yancey asks that we each confront it in our soul and for that he gets eviscerated.

@thr2 In regards to your "we." I do not know what it is like to be you.  Please do not pretend to know what it is like to be me.

Yancy himself has accused an entire race of racism--the very worst accusation that can be made against anyone. The fact that his claim as apparently acceptable to major newspapers is what is could be considered "scary," but the response to his charge should be laughter--loud, long, and consistent.  Mock him relentlessly--it is the only logical, reasoned response-you need not be defensive-it only encourages people like him.

@weetamoe  Relentless mocking is the only "logical, reasoned response"?  Logical and reasoned??  Really???

weetamoe
weetamoe

@Here's_to_Blue @weetamoe Yes, to charges like his. Please refer to Dorothy Parker's response to people like him at Madison Square Garden many years ago.  The only response to irrational hate like Yancy's s to mock it.
